Whimsical Crochet Hat For the New Year

I spent the last couple of days crocheting this hat from Kirsten Holloway Designs. It’s a free pattern called the Snow Country Ski Beanie.

I actually already have a version of this hat in purple that I made last winter. I wear it all the time and get tons of compliments on it. It fits a bit loosely so I wanted one that was a bit more snug on my head so it doesn’t slide around when I’m working.

I thought it would be fun to use a multi-colored yarn this time. I had a skein of Red Heart Super Saver Rainbow Stripes that I bought because I thought it was actually rainbow yarn. This was very much a trust the process situation. The perfectionist in me was screaming at the way the colors would slightly overlap the rows, but not completely. But it worked out surprisingly okay with this pattern. I did add an extra row of the at the bottom before the final single crochet row. Someday I will make this hat again with more intentional color choices and placements.

This hat is not easy. It’s not simple. It’s not fun to make. But to make up for that, the pattern is really well written and technically easy to understand. Just the doing it is hard. Though it was much easier the second time around. Utilize your stitch markers, especially for the first half. Trust the pattern.

The end result is a little clownish. But it’s also whimsical and silly. Things I aspire to be.

I write about life.
